Katherine Connor, the visionary founder and CEO of BLES, fondly regards Pancake as her “shadow,” a term of endearment stemming from a compassionate supporter who brought the loyal dog into the sanctuary fold.

While BLES is renowned for its commitment to rescuing elderly elephants retired from labor, the sanctuary’s diverse animal community is no stranger to forging unique and heartfelt bonds.

In a poignant episode from years past, Sao Noi, an elderly elephant, found solace in the gentle trunk strokes of Boon Thong during her final moments.

Now, the narrative has shifted, and it is Boon Thong facing her last moments. Pancake, attuned to her friend’s distress, rushed to her side.

Having embraced the serenity of the sanctuary, Pancake, alongside Connor, devoted precious hours to Boon Thong, reminiscing about her life and bidding her a poignant farewell.

Boon Thong, in her 60s, spent her last five years at BLES after being rescued from a riding camp. After nearly three decades of shouldering the burdens of carrying tourists on her back, an endeavor that took a toll on her, Boon Thong finally found freedom, autonomy, and self-expression at the sanctuary.

As Boon Thong took her final breath, Connor and Pancake stood steadfast by her side for nine hours. Pancake’s unwavering compassion illuminated the moment, providing solace to Boon Thong until the very end.

Boon Thong found her eternal rest on the sanctuary grounds, surrounded by fruits and flowers, joining her old friends, including Sao Noi, in a final resting place that reverberates with the compassion and unity fostered at BLES.
