In the heart of Kenya, a heartwarming saga unfolded thanks to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT), revealing an extraordinary friendship that blossomed between a rescued baby elephant named Jotto and an unexpected companion-a friendly ostrich named Pea.

Jotto, a vulnerable one-month-old elephant, found himself in a precarious situation after tumbling into a well, severing ties with his herd. Promptly responding to the rescue call, the DSWT orchestrated a mission to transport him to a Kenyan elephant orphanage.

Little did anyone anticipate that Jotto would soon forge an unbreakable bond with Pea, a compassionate ostrich residing at the sanctuary.

During the rescue mission for the baby elephant, the orphanage staff discovered Pea and her ostrich brother, Pod, also in need of assistance.

In a remarkable display of compassion, both ostriches were brought back to the shelter alongside the rescued elephant.

While Pod successfully reintegrated into the wild, Pea chose to remain at the shelter, forming an unexpected yet profound connection with the elephant herd.

Pea now considers herself an integral part of the community at the Nairobi Nursery, showcasing a remarkable sense of belonging.

The depth of the bond between Jotto and Pea became apparent as they consistently snuggled and expressed affection for each other.

Pea, the caring ostrich, assumed a nurturing role in Jotto’s life, significantly contributing to his healing and overall well-being. The joy radiated by the young elephant was palpable each time he embraced these comforting moments with his feathered companion.

In a recent update, DSWT shared, “Orphaned ostrich Pea sees herself as an integral part of the elephant herd, and young Jotto is more than content to share cuddles with his feathered companion.

These heartwarming moments unfold at the Nairobi Nursery, where not only these two orphans but many others are provided with the chance to heal and, in due time, reintegrate into the wild.”
