In a remarkable act of heroism, the Sri Lankan navy undertook a daring 12-hour rescue mission to save a struggling elephant at sea, earning praise for their courage and dedication.

Termed a “miraculous escape” for the distressed creature, the operation unfolded off the northeast coast of the island. Collaborating with wildlife officials, the navy launched the mission upon discovering the struggling elephant. Navy spokesperson Chaminda Walakuluge provided insights into the rescue efforts.

With the assistance of skilled wildlife officials and divers, the distressed elephant was approached cautiously. Ropes were expertly secured around the animal, and with great care, it was gently guided to shallower waters near the coast. The successful release took place late yesterday.

The elephant’s ordeal likely began as it crossed the Kokkilai lagoon, a significant water body situated between two jungle areas, being carried out to sea. In a compelling image, the elephant is seen raising its trunk above the water, with the Sri Lankan navy in the background, making its way to the rescue.

Walakuluge explained that elephants often traverse shallow waters or swim as a means to find more convenient pathways, shedding light on the circumstances leading to this maritime adventure.

This successful rescue operation comes on the heels of a recent incident where the navy, alongside local residents, effectively saved a pod of 20 pilot whales stranded near Trincomalee, a renowned natural harbor for whale watching.
