While he specializes in various subjects, it’s the powerful surges of Lake Erie that truly captivate him, prompting him to take flight whenever he hears of an impending storm.

Facing gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour, Pottelberg strategically positions himself, keeping his equipment low to the ground to withstand the elements. This meticulous preparation is driven by his desire to capture the raw strength and breathtaking beauty of the massive waves rising from Lake Erie.

“The stronger the storm, the more eager I am to get out there and capture new artwork,” says Pottelberg. “While most seek shelter during these storms, I welcome the opportunity to face them head-on.”

Enduring storms during various times, including sunset, Pottelberg’s photographs showcase a mesmerizing contrast between the blazing orange sky and the cold blue spray. Some instances portray a dramatic deep blue sky, creating a fascinating interplay between nature’s elements.

Acknowledging the inherent danger in his storm-chasing endeavors, Pottelberg, who suffers from permanent nerve damage as a consequence, believes the risks are justified to reveal the beauty of nature. “When people see my work and thank me for braving Mother Nature’s wrath from the safety of their own home,” he admits, “that’s the greatest compliment for me.”
