Guatapé is one of the most colorful towns in the world blessed with many beautiful places, of which La Piedra Del Peñol is the most prominent.
“La Piedra Del Peñol” in Spanish means “The Rock of Guatapé” or simply known as “La Piedra”, is a large rock located in the town and municipality of Guatapé in Antioquia province of Colombia.
The rock formation of the town of Guatapé dates back to about 70 million years ago, with two-thirds of the rock’s height underground, with an outcrop more than 200 meters high rising from the surrounding plain. It can be seen from the countryside several kilometers away.
This is a large rock that is almost smooth, with only a crack running from the top to the bottom, on one of the rock’s surfaces. Through this crack, people built a staircase with 649 steps.
The narrow path inside the staircase leads up to the rock.
The staircase appearing in the middle of this crack stands out like a giant stitch linking the stone crack together.
On top of this rock, people also built a small protective fence, inside is an area with display stands, selling souvenirs and a wide, open step with beautiful views so people can Take in the breathtaking views all around.

The rock is located on the border of the towns of Guatapé and El Peñol, both of which claim ownership. The story of competing for ownership of the rock happened once, when the residents of the town of Guatapé decided to solve this ownership issue by painting the name of their town on the rock in very large white letters. . The work of the residents of Guatapé town was quickly discovered by the residents of El Peñol town, so they gathered at the rock in large numbers to protest the painting, asking the town of Guatapé to immediately stop this marking of sovereignty. Therefore, only one letter “G” and half of the letter “U” are completed. These two giant letters can still be seen today on the north face of the rock.
This rock was first officially conquered by three climbers Luis Villegas, Pedro Nel Ramírez and Ramón Díaz in July 1954. They used sticks fixed into cracks in the rock to climb and climb. The idea of building stairs in this crack was implemented soon after. During the 1940s, the Colombian government declared the rock a “National Monument”.
