Jackfruit, with its delectable yellow segments, has long been a favorite fruit for many. Common knowledge dictates that young jackfruit is green and turns yellow as it ripens, emitting a sweet fragrance. However, have you ever come across a jackfruit with pinkish-red skin and flesh?
Uploaded on YouTube on June 11, a video titled “Strange Indian Jackfruit Tree & Unique Red Jackfruit in Vietnam – Genetic Mutant Jackfruit – Amazing Red Jackfruit” has garnered over 2.4 million views. The curiosity is piqued as viewers wonder if a red jackfruit truly exists in the world.
The video, shot by a YouTuber in Cao Lanh city (Dong Thap), spans over 15 minutes. In it, the narrator shares that this particular jackfruit variety was brought to him by a friend who traveled from Portugal. After planting it, he achieved the remarkable results presented in the video and proudly asserts that his jackfruit tree is “unique” in Vietnam.
Pointing to the unusual red-skinned jackfruits, the farmer continues to showcase the fruit, emphasizing its red interior, larger size, and sweeter taste compared to regular jackfruit. To validate his claims, he promptly cuts open a ripe fruit to offer a taste to the male YouTuber.
Upon slicing the jackfruit in half, the segments inside exhibit an orange-red hue instead of the typical yellow. The narrator notes that the fruit’s segments were not as red as the ones he consumed the previous week.
Upon trying the jackfruit segment, the male YouTuber expresses that it is sweeter and more fragrant than the conventional variety. The farmer even encourages him to save the seeds for cultivation, further cultivating this rare plant variety.
This intriguing clip, reposted on TikTok, quickly garners over 13.5 million views and numerous comments, with some expressing skepticism, suggesting that the jackfruits might be painted red as a “view-baiting” trick. Others, however, express admiration and a desire to purchase and try this unique fruit.
A close examination of the jackfruit’s peel raises suspicions among some viewers, who believe it might be painted. A Google and YouTube search reveals that there is indeed a pink jackfruit variety originating from Portugal called “Jaca cor de rosa.” While jackfruit with red flesh is not uncommon in Vietnam, the authenticity of this particular jackfruit’s peculiar colors remains a controversial topic on social networks.
