Amsterdam plays host to the most magnificent maritime spectacle on the global stage, attracting tall ships from every corner of the world.
SAIL Amsterdam stands as one of the premier attractions in the city, drawing an impressive assembly of tall ships and numerous historical vessels to grace the banks of the river IJ in a spectacular parade. This extraordinary event occurs once every five years, typically spanning from August 19 to August 23. The participating ships engage in a myriad of captivating activities, ranging from sailor choirs to re-enactments of naval battles. Amidst the majestic fleet, thousands of smaller yachts and boats, filled with eager spectators, contribute to the creation of a truly awe-inspiring spectacle.
The 2015 edition of SAIL Amsterdam set a remarkable record, with a staggering 2.7 million attendees witnessing the maritime extravaganza. The event featured over 50 tall ships and countless smaller watercraft. The sheer magnitude of the gathering is vividly captured in the aerial photo above and a mesmerizing timelapse filmed by Boyd Baptist.
